Cataloochee Valley - Maggie Valley
Cataloochee Valley is a special part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Bordering Maggie Valley's north side, the valley is accessable from the end of Jonathan Creek (hwy 276) on Cove Creek Road. A short drive up and over the mounatin ridge drops you into a valley that time has forgot. The farmsteads that once dotted the mountains when the land was turned into a national park are still here. The hayfields are now the domain of the great elk that was reintroduced into the park nearly ten years ago. At dawn and dusk elk are almost alway present in the field grazing on the tall grass the way they did up until the turn of last century. The elk sometimes wander in the direction of Maggie Valley which can make a unusual driving hazard.
